Assessing your needs

The types and levels of contaminants in your tap water will determine whether you should buy and install a water filter and which type you need. Filtering your tap water gives you some control over what’s removed from the water you drink. Unlike bottled water, many filters tell you exactly what they filter out. They can remove many, but not all, of the contaminants your water may contain. However, you must replace filter cartridges every few months, some systems may not deliver water quickly enough when you want it, and, depending on the type of system, you may have to pay a plumber to install it.
