Consumer Reports June 09 green roundup

Here are the latest green highlights from the June 2009 issue of Consumer Reports.

ELECTRONICS

Find free electronics recycling programs. Increasingly more manufacturers are offering free drop-off or mail-in recycling programs. Companies include LG, Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Dell. Cell-phone makers and service providers also have free recycling or reuse programs through stores and dealers. For more details, read Where to recycle electronics, free.

HEALTH

How climate change might affect your health. Close to half of Americans say global warming threatens their future well-being and safety, according to a 2008 survey by researchers at George Mason University. Increasingly, evidence shows they're right. Climate-related problems include allergies and asthma, insect-borne diseases, heat-related illness, and mental health issues. Get the full story by reading How to cope with a warmer world.

HOME & GARDEN

When being green saves green. Several of the recent penny-pinching tips we collected from staff and readers can not only help you save money, but the planet, too. Here are just a few of the tips:

• Borrow books and videos from the library rather than paying at a bookstore or video store.
• Avoid bottled water. Buy a decent water bottle for everyone in the family, put their names on them, and refill.
• Use newspaper instead of paper towels to clean exterior windows and glass doors.
