How much capacity do you need? Most of the dishwashers sold today are built-in models that fit into a 24-inch space under a countertop. There are also compact models that will squeeze into a narrower space and portable styles you can roll over to the sink and connect to a faucet. For greater capacity there are 30-inch-wide models, although they cost more both to buy and to run.
If you don’t dirty enough dishes to fill a standard dishwasher, you might consider a smaller, less-conventional one. Several companies offer dishwasher-in-a-drawer models with two stacked drawers that can be used either simultaneously or independently. This sort of flexibility can be a benefit environmentally, but these models are more costly—about $1,200.
