Organic: What Does It Mean?

We rate the organic label as highly meaningful on produce and unprocessed foods, and meaningful on meat, poultry and processed foods.

In our label comparison charts, we include the organic label so you can see how the label stacks up.

We work tirelessly on behalf of consumers to ensure the organic label stays strong and meaningful, meets consumer expectations, and improves over time to support sustainable agriculture, which benefits us all.

National Organic Standards Board

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) is a 15-member citizen panel that meets twice a year to discuss and vote on recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture. We attend these meetings and submit comprehensive comments to the NOSB on their proposals, to ensure that the consumers' voice is heard.

Surveys

Consumer Surveys

We advocate for meaningful and positive change for the organic label, and in doing so, it's important to know what consumers expect when they buy foods labeled "organic." We regularly conduct nationally representative consumer surveys to better understand what consumers expect from the organic label.
