ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:
HISTORY
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has been certifying products as organic according to its own state standards since 2000. The USDA National Organic Program was implemented October 21, 2002. Iowa’s organic program must now certify that food products follow USDA's National Organic Program.

FUNDING
State government agencies do not receive external funds.

STRUCTURE
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) accredits all organic certifiers. Changes made to the National Organic Program and its standards will be made through the USDA. State Departments of Agriculture may apply for amended standards through the USDA. USDA-accredited state departments are considered to be public organic certifiers and therefore do not have a board of directors.
