What this seal means:
This seal can be found on products that are certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). The seal conveys to consumers that the organic standards prohibit genetically modified crops and ingredients derived from genetically modified organisms. (Organic standards do allow for the use of vaccines derived from genetically engineered organisms.) The prohibition on GMOs in organic agriculture is just one of many requirements in the organic standards, which are comprehensive and also prohibit synthetic and toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics, and more.
What this seal means
A closer look behind the standards
This seal can be used only when the product is certified organic by CCOF, one of eighty USDA-accredited certifying agencies that is authorized by the USDA to certify farms and businesses to the USDA organic standards. CCOF has no additional requirements for use of this seal.
The standards behind this seal, therefore, are the same as the USDA organic standards.
